Self Care is not Selfish

Self-Care 101

Self-care is the practice of looking after and prioritizing one's own mental and physical wellbeing.

Spiritual Self-care refers to nourishing our inner being, taking care of the matters of the heart which allows us to say to our God, “Lord, I trust in You”.

Self-care also means, taking the time to do things that help you live well and improve both your physical health and mental health. When it comes to your mental health, self-care can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy.

Self-care is a way to make sure you're ready to handle whatever comes your way in a safe and healthy way.

What are (3) reasons why Self-care is important?

Engaging in a self-care routine has been clinically proven to reduce or eliminate anxiety and depression, reduce stress, improve concentration, minimize frustration and anger, increase happiness, improve energy, and more.

What are the Benefits of Self-care?

Self-care can improve your physical health.

Self-care can reduce stress and anxiety.

Self-care can boost your self-esteem.

Self-care protects your mental health.

Self-care can lead to better relationships.

By improving your physical health, you will be better able to maintain your mental health, and therefore may be more effective in supporting someone you care about. Exercising regularly is an important part of staying both physically and mentally healthy.

What Is Self-Care?

Self-care has been defined as "a multidimensional, multifaceted process of purposeful engagement in strategies that promote healthy functioning and enhance well-being."1 Essentially, the term describes a conscious act a person takes in order to promote their own physical, mental, and emotional health.

There are many forms self-care can take. It could be ensuring you get enough sleep every night or stepping outside for a few minutes for some fresh air.

Self-care is vital for building resilience toward those stressors in life that you can't eliminate. When you've taken steps to care for your mind and body, you'll be better equipped to live your best life.

Unfortunately, however, many people view self-care as a luxury, rather than a priority. Consequently, they're left feeling overwhelmed, tired, and ill-equipped to handle life's challenges.

Self-care means we commit to taking an active role in safeguarding our mental and physical wellness, proactively and (especially) in times of duress. By definition, self-care means doing what is good for us—increasing our emotional and physical stamina, improving our self-esteem, and building resilience.
